For automatic transmissions, it’s recommended to change the transmission fluid every 60,000 to 80,000 miles. However, the exact mileage will depend on the vehicle’s use – and there is no harm in changing the fluid before it hits that mark, so it’s better to err on the side of caution and change it too early than too late.
Step 2. Locate the bushing (or, on some vehicles, the check/fill plug) on the transmission’s side. Look for the upper plug on the transmission case of a four-speed vehicle (passenger side), or for the lower plug on a five-speed vehicle (driver’s side). Wipe any mud or foreign debris off both of them.
Step 2. Place the catch pan underneath the transmission, then unscrew the fill plug. Fluid drains from the transmission quickly at first. When the flow of fluid has stopped, support the bottom pan of the transmission body, then unscrew the bolts. Carefully lower the detached transmission pan and empty the remaining fluid into the catch pan.
3. Add following initial quantity of Mopar® ATF +4, Automatic Transmission Fluid, to the transmission:a. If only fluid and filter were changed, add 5.0 L (10.6pts.) of transmission fluid to transmission. b. If the transmission was completely overhauled or the torque converter was replaced or drained, add 7.7 L (16.3 pts.) of transmission fluid Loosen the plug, pull it out, and give it a nice clean. The drain plug is located on the driver's side just next to the dogbone/pendulum mount and can be easily reached from the front of the car. Get the plug nice and loose so the fluid is dripping and get your container ready to catch the fluid.
Step 4: Remove the transmission oil pan fill plug. Locate the fill plug, which is located on the angled portion of the transmission oil pan. Break the fill plug loose with a 6mm hex bit and ratchet. Do not fully remove the fill plug. Place a drain pan under the fill plug in case ATF comes out, then remove the fill plug.
Installation and Refill. Fit the new filter and apply the new gasket to the pan. Install the oil pan and do not over tighten the bolts to not crush the gasket, make the rubber do the sealing and not brute force. Use a crisscrossing pattern like tightening the lug bolts to ensure evenly distributed gasket.

Personally, I like to change fluids before what's recommended and usually on intervals I can easily remember. Oil every 5k, diffs, manual trans and transfer cases every 30k and auto trans every 50k. Fluid is cheap compared to a new gearbox.
