Dead Island 1/Riptide (or whatever, didn't play it really) already had this mechanic and it worked great. Weapons lost damage and handling over time and could be repaired at one of many workbenches. They didn't just break so you never lost your upgraded weapons. It worked great. Happy to see Dead Island 2 use this mechanic as well.
